Gays Should Have their Own Campaign for AIDS Funding

Gay marriage is on the ballot in many states this year. A hearty percentage of the population truly, honestly believes this is an issue that has reached it’s time.

Before voters support gay marriage, we should have a chance to judge the gay community on their own merits.

AIDS research, and funding for free AIDS medicines to million of people overseas, is funded 100% by the federal government. More money has been spent by the federal government on AIDS research every year over the last two decades than all other diseases combined – cancer, heart disease, diabetes and mental illness.

If disabled veterans have to get help via the Wounded Warriors and all the other veterans groups; if breast cancer organizations have to spend an enormous amount of energy soliciting funds from the general public; if every other medical malady under the sun depends on radio, TV, cable, and Internet advertising; not to mention cold calling, telethons and public awareness campaigns – why not gays and AIDS?

The gay community should be spending their time and money not on lobbying Washington and the states for universal acceptance of gay marriage, but on soliciting AIDS funding. After all, 85% of all gays live in a dozen large cities.

How would the general public – the voters! – perceive gays if they (we) were constantly bombarded with cold calls like we all are for helping cancer victims, state troopers associations, disabled veterans groups and the like? If you had limited resources to donate, would gays be at the top of your list? Whom is most deserving?

How much gumption do gays really have? Could they put as much energy into soliciting money for AIDS programs overseas as they do to get gay marriage rights in the U.S.? If they want to be accepted at any level in our society, they should be held to the same standard as other groups who are the victim of some form of deadly disease.

Would you donate money to such a desperate plea? If you wouldn’t open up your heart and pocketbook to gays over the phone, you have no business voting to support gay marriage on election day.
