Two exploration drilling rigs are lost in Abydos, Valley of the Dead, Egypt. Some say unexpected weather phenomena is to blame. Others say it’s the curse of the pharaohs, for profaning the sacred tomb of Seti I.
A third drilling expedition is organized by SULLIVAN and CROMWELL. Their rig superintendent is WURMHOLTZ, a gruff Jesuit priest on assignment from the Vatican and PONTIFEX, to lookout for the return of LEVIATHAN, the mythical best of antiquity.
KASE hires on as the new rig engineer. His older brother died on the first rig disaster, and he wants to avenge him. Kase has an obsession with all things ancient Roman. His family has been engineers since time immemorial, beginning with the ancient Etruscans.
J.BO is the rig’s new mud engineer. She’s a scrappy Arab American with deep roots in Egypt, a spiritual perspective on life, and a mystical sensitivity, borne of a devotion to Isis, the Goddess who once ruled the ancient world.
Wurmholtz investigates rumors near an old Roman fort at Kharga Oasis nearby. He finds an underground cavern, evidence of a giant egg shell, and an ancient dragon-shaped cartouche.
Kase rummages one night through the charred remains of the destroyed rigs. He finds his brother’s belongings, and an ornate ring always worn by the eldest son, a family heirloom dating back to prehistory.
The drilling operation gets underway…
