Asparagus May Help With That Lousy Hangover

Feeling under the weather today? A 2009 study in the Journal of Food Science suggests that the amino acids and minerals in asparagus may help with alcohol hangovers.

Korean researchers studied the effects of young asparagus shoots on human liver cells. (The leaves had a much higher amino acid and mineral content than the shoots.)

Hangovers are caused by oxidative stress on the liver. Toxicity levels were decreased markedly by treatment with the extracts of asparagus leaves and shoots.

Asparagus has long been used as a herbal medicine. It has antifungal, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.
