Here we have the story of genetic engineering gone amok. A mad scientist experiments on a remote island, mixing human genes with all manner of animal genes – orangutans, gorillas, hyenas, monkeys, dogs, felines.
The question that begs is what purpose is the soul? Is there a God? These new creatures ask this question often (far more often than humans do). This film makes it pretty clear that man most certainly is NOT made in God’s image. Maybe woman. Definitely not man.
What is a lesser animal to do with heightened intelligence from splicing their genes with man’s? Is it a blessing or a curse? Without the capacity to actualize that intelligence – with poor vocal skills, limited dexterity – what’s left but a pitiful creature driven to insanity as sure as you can’t fit a tempest in a teacup?
Isn’t that the purpose of the soul? Once creatures outgrow their body and skill set as the course of evolution, they advance to the next level, one that affords the mental architecture suiting a higher intelligence.
Likewise, what of a human being who fails to use his or her intelligence to the utmost? The soul can just as easily transgress backwards as forwards. Indeed, the natural evolution seems to be backward; you can see it every day in the news.
De-evolution is as much a reality as evolution, if not more so.
