What We Need is 100,000 new P.E. Teachers

Conservatives want to put an armed security guard in every school of America. That’s 100,000 schools times two guards for two shifts equals 200,000 guards times $50,000 salary equals $10 billion.

The NRA is pushing hard for just that.

” Stop that, child ! You might hurt yourself !”

Obama is always calling for more teachers and a better education for our kids.  More teachers and better schools and all the money in the world won’t help students who are fat, lazy and unmotivated.  Armed guards won’t help either.

What kids need is more exercise at school.  100,000 new P.E. teachers will do more good than a million new classroom teachers.

Regular physical exercise at school improves concentration, self-esteem, verbal performance and general academic skills.  Why, then, is P.E. class an elective – and an unpopular one, at that – in most public schools?

Since when are classes in school determined as a popularity contest?  We can all see the good that’s done.  The present generation of young adults is ill prepared for work, marriage, responsibility and every other skill needed to succeed in society.

There are a thousand theories and as many government studies to investigate this disturbing trend.  All kids need is more exercise.

The army can’t train new recruits in basic training to the level they need to be because their bones are too weak.  Bone fractures from wearing heavy packs is one of of the most common injuries for service members.

Kids don’t eat right, and they sure don’t exercise enough to develop even minimally functional skeletons.  Their bones are so weak that strength training in Basic and thereafter still can’t build a decent soldier.

Teachers often complain that kids don’t play in the neighborhood after they get home.  They watch TV or surf the web or text their friends on cell phones or play violent video games.  The average kid kills 20,000 virtual people by age 18.

They don’t participate in outside and back yard activities that are where they learn coping skills and tolerance, negotiating and reasoning.  Teachers have to resolve differences between kids that in years past would never have happened.

A generation of kids without strong social skills means a generation of adults with relationship problems, sexual identity problems and difficulty coping with stress.  Most of life’s problems can’t be solved with a text message or a posting on Facebook.

Nothing relieves stress better and more naturally than physical exercise.  Kids need to understand that and learn to use exercise for their whole lives.  They will be happier and more successful all their born days.

A daily P.E. class is all kids need to get better grades, learn social skills and develop the self confidence to avoid drugs, sex, tobacco and alcohol.

They will develop a keen interest in fitness that will avoid a lifetime coping with obesity and all it’s complications – diabetes, heart problems, depression and joint problems.

They learn self-respect and respect for their peers.  They learn how to work out problems with their personality instead of with weapons.
